Girls’Day at IPS
On April 26, 13 highly motivated and inquisitive girls (age 10 years onwards) visited the IPS and the KIT Light Source. The IPS offered two workshops within the german-wide event “Girls’Day – Mädchenzukunftstag”, giving insight into technical and scientific job profiles in two areas: vacuum science and crystal growth, and X-ray optics and imaging (together with the IMT). With hands-on experiments, the first group of girls was introduced to the power of vacuum and found out how to blow up balloons without touching. The girls learned that crystals are special but also quite common, and that outside appearance is not everything. The second group experienced how X-rays can be used to explore the interior of opaque objects without destroying them, looking into a peanut without cracking its shell. As highlight, the secret of the Kinder surprise egg was solved.
We were impressed by the active participation and quick thinking of the girls, and we thank them for their wonderful visit!
